As we head into winter our pastures are put to bed to regrow for the upcoming 2025 hay season.
While we wait for the pastures our chickens are stationary in their two 50 ft x 20 automated schooners.
The two "mobile coops" are equipped with nesting boxes, roosts and automatic waterers.
Throughout the winter we regularly bed the chickens with straw and sawdust as well as maintain a dustbath that keeps the chickens stimulated and healthy during the wetter months.
During the spring and summer we tow the schooners to fresh pasture twice a day.
Moving the chickens across pasture allows the chickens access to fresh grass and forage as well as an evenly distribution of their manure.
The schooners allow the chickens to forage and preen outside while being protected from the elements and predators.
This form of regenerative agriculture benefits both the pasture and our chickens.
The pasture benefits from the added nutrients by being grazed and the chickens enjoy fresh, nutrient-dense grass that in turn gives us a delicious and nutritious egg.
